    Zdenka, the most important female character in the family described in the story "The Family of a Vourdalak", is an interesting character to analyze.  Initially, she does not seem like a person who would fit the description of a vampire willingly wanting to feed on the blood of a human for the sole purpose of pleasure and survival.  After progressing through the story it becomes more clear that she is a vourdalak , specifically by the actions she takes and the way her family acts in accordance with her.  For example, Marquis (narrator) describes Zdenka in a charming way:

    Folktales involving either a werewolf or a creature that seeks to cause harm to young girls were more commonly seen in earlier Slavic culture.  Classic examples of these types of folktales include "Little Red Hat" and "Little Red Riding Hood".  The tale "Little Red Hat" depicts an ogre that essentially manipulates a young girl to only devour her.  An ogre can be seen in many different viewpoints but the most important idea regarding this creature is that its goal is to attack and eventually consume its victim.  The victim in many of Slavic folktales are young girls.  A common theme in these tales is that these young girls are innocent children who are tricked into thinking that are going to stay with a relative (mainly grandmothers) but re…

    Tales involving vampires are seen as stories that involve some kind of dark or fearful aspect to them.  Other classic examples involving vampires and the type of fear that could be associated with them could be seen in pieces such as "Death at the Wedding" , "Bucket of Blood"  , and "Peasant and Corpse" .  The tale "Death at the Wedding" depicts the differences between civilians and the tormentors.  Fear is something that is not in the blood in the courageous soldier described in the tale.  When seeing the kind of damage the vampire caused to civilains, the soldier began to question why he did so.  After discussing why the vampire committed such an act, he willingly told the soldier how to deal with vampires and subsequently put an end to …
